A Fresh New Look At The Aztec Boys & Girls Club

Thanks to a very generous donation from our friends at ConocoPhillips Company we opened our doors for our Summer Programs with a new floor in our entry way and new carpet in our game room and reception area. The makeover was badly needed as these are high traffic areas and were looking pretty shabby after almost nine years of wear and tear by lots of very active members. ConocoPhillips philosophy is that “A company’s ability to grow depends not only on its business success but also its reputation as a corporate citizen." This reputation is built largely by responsible civic actions, social investment and environmental stewardship.”  ConocoPhillips commitment to our community is evident by their continued contributions. It’s nice to have partners like ConocoPhillips who continue to help us meet the needs of our members.

Teens & Tweens Help Clean Up San Juan County

On June 18, 2008 25 members of the Teen Center and The Aztec Boys & Girls Club headed out to help Williams Exploration and Production clean up a 5 mile stretch of Rosa Road.  This clean-up project is something that Williams sponsors every year involving kids from the community and we felt very honored to have been selected this year.  Participants were treated to a fantastic lunch provided by Triple S Trucking and will all have their way paid to Cliffs Amusement Park in Albuquerque by Williams for their help.  Not bad wages for a day of picking up trash!

Thank You To Our Friends At XTO Energy

The Aztec Boys & Girls Club has been fortunate to partner on a couple different ventures with XTO Energy in recent months.  XTO is committed to maintaining good will and to being a good civic neighbor, which they do in a variety of ways with both the contribution of both money and time.
XTO Energy sponsored our recent Barbecue fundraiser that we held in conjunction with our Walkathon on May 31st.  It was a perfect way to wrap up our Walkathon with a hearty barbecue beef sandwich, potato salad and a brownie.  Coca-Cola supplied the cold drinks to accompany the meal. Thanks to XTO the Aztec Boys & Girls Club raised almost $4,000 from the barbecue!
On June 19th members of the Summer Program and a group of members from our Teen Center drove over to Animas Park for a field trip to the Nature Center.  They had a great, but hot afternoon of studying the flora and fauna to be found along the Animas River.  At the end of their hike they were met by three XTO Energy employees, Dashelle Graves, Mike Marriott and John Weaver who supplied cold drinks and ice cream for everyone.  After cooling down a bit they visited one of XTO’s working well sites right in Animas Park and Mr. Weaver and Mr. Marriott explained the different equipment on the well site and stressed  how important it is be safe and to NEVER play near a well site.   It was an interesting talk and it was amazing to see how many wells there are in San Juan County. After the talk our members were given “gifts“  from our friends at XTO, a key chain, notebook and pen and a drink cozy.  A lot of our members have parents who work in the oil industry and several expressed on their way home that the visit to the well site was their favorite part of the day.

2008 Walkathon

Please Click To See A List Of Our Sponsors

The Aztec Boys & Girls Club’s 4th Annual Walkathon was held on May 31st.  Our walkathon is not only a fundraiser for our organization, but is intended to promote awareness of our Club and Teen Center and our mission: To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us the most to realize their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.”  Everyone met at the Club on Ash St. first thing Saturday morning to turn in their pledge money and get their tee shirts and then walked as a group in the Aztec Fiesta Days parade. We were joined by our 2008 Champion for Children, Wink Meador.  Mr. Meador is a long time supporter of the Aztec Boys & Girls Club as well as many other youth related causes in Aztec and typically does not like a lot of recognition for his good works, but he graciously accepted our award and walked with all of the walkers to encourage others to support the Aztec Boys & Girls Club.  XTO Energy provided a great barbecue meal as part of the fundraising event and meals were served both at the Club on Ash St. and at Minium Park as part of the Fiesta Days celebration.  Between the walkathon and the barbecue we raised nearly $30,000 for our organization!  Many thanks to the numerous corporate sponsors,  XTO Energy, Wink Meador, all of the Walkathon Team Captains, Walkers and those who pledged and especially to our 2008 Walkathon Co-Chairs, Millie Howle and Lori Scott!  Lori and Millie worked very hard to make this event the success that it was.

The Artists Among Us

The Aztec Boys & Girls Club and its Teen Center have a wonderful year-round program that encourages artistic expression among Club members through drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media and sculpture. In December 2007 the Aztec Boys & Girls Club held its First Annual Fine Arts Exhibit and displayed their members’ artwork at the Aztec Public Library. The artwork was judged by local art teachers and artists, Zack Pettijohn, Barbara Thomas and Deb Fisher. The local winners’ creations were then sent to the Southwest Regional Fine Arts Exhibit in Oklahoma where their work was judged against artists in four age divisions for club members age 6-18. Two of our member’s artwork was selected at the Regional Exhibit to be included in the National Fine Arts Exhibit. Winners at the National Fine Arts Exhibit’s artwork will be displayed throughout the ensuing year at Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s events, including the National Conference in May in San Francisco and will be featured in a virtual gallery on BGCA’s Web sites. Everyone at the Aztec Boys & Girls Club is extremely proud of all of our artists, but especially of the two whose work was selected to be judged at the National Fine Arts Exhibit. Congratulations to Ms. Sarah Hawkes, and Ms. Jessica Cole and a big thank you to Mr. Pettijohn, and Mrs. Fisher and Mrs. Thomas. For more information about the Aztec Boys & Girls Club and its many other programs you can call 334-8861.
